21/06/2013 (Bernama) - Malaysia's palm oil export earnings is expected to record an increase to RM73 billion this year against the RM71.3 billion posted in 2012.

The Secretary General of the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities (MPIC) Datin Paduka Nurmala Abdul Rahim said the decline in export last year, when compared to 2011 at RM80.4 billion, was due to a drop in the palm oil price.

"The value of Malaysia's palm oil export in 2013 depends on market response and the palm oil price, which is expected to recover following strong demand for the commodity.

"The oil palm industry is the biggest contributor to the country's gross national income," she added.

She told reporters this when met after officiating the 19th Seminar on Technology Transfer organised by the Malaysian Palm Oil Board(MPOB) in Bangi, near here Thursday.

Also present was MPOB Director General Datuk Dr Choo Yuen May.

Meanwhile, Nurmala said the ministry would organise the 5th Malaysian International Commodity Conference and Showcase (MICCOS 2013) from Oct 24-27 this year and themed, "Sustainable Commodity for A Better Tomorrow".

It will held at the Malaysian Agro Exposition Park (MAEPS) in Serdang, Selangor.

She also said MICCOS 2013 will be officiated by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

MICCOS is a biennial event organised by the MPIC with the aim of promoting the latest technology in the plantation industry and Malaysian commodities encompassing oil palm, rubber, timber, cocoa, pepper, kenaf and tobacco, among others.
