Activity at Karachi and Qasim Ports

22/05/2013 (Business Recorder) - The Karachi Port handled 289,458 tonnes of cargo comprising 239,781 tonnes of import cargo and 49,677 tonnes of export cargo including 7,878 loaded and empty containers during the last 48 hours ended at 0700 hours on Monday. The total import cargo of 239,781 tonnes comprised 89,922 tonnes of containerised cargo; 18,594 tonnes of general cargo; 28,905 tonnes of bulk cargo: 26,909 tonnes of coal; 1,996 tonnes of sulphur and 102,360 tonnes of oil/liquid cargo.

The total export cargo of 49,677 tonnes comprised 42,794 tonnes of containerised cargo; 415 tonnes of general cargo; 1,028 tonnes of bulk cargo: 414 tonnes of rice; 255 tonnes of atta; 359 tonnes of sugar and 5,440 tonnes of oil/liquid cargo. As many as 7,878 containers comprising 4,868 containers import and 3,010 containers export were handled during the last 24 hours on Monday.

The brakeup of imported containers shows 1,717 of 20's and 1,481 of 40's loaded while 19 of 20's and 85 of 40's empty containers, whereas that of exported containers shows 826 of 20's and 618 of 40's loaded containers while 442 of 20's and 253 of 40's empty containers were handled during the business hours.

There are nine ships namely Rio De La Plata, Shiba, STX Patraikos, BBC Oregon, Water Breeze, Golden Gion, Oriental Freesia, APL Guangzhou and Stove Transport with three container ships, four oil tankers and two general cargo ships respectively sailed out to sea during the reported period. There are twelve vessels viz Shiba, STX Patraikos, YM South, MOL Dignity, Santa Rosa, Hyundai Freedom, Water Breeze, Calida, Dong A Peneus, Stove Transport, Banglar Kakoli and Chang Hang Huai with six container ships, three oil tankers, two general cargo ship and one coal carrier respectively are currently at the berths.

There are three ships namely MOL Dignity, Scirocco and Opal Ace with one container ship, one oil tanker and one vehicle carrier respectively sailed out to sea on Monday, while four ships namely YM South, Wan Hai-601, Calida and Dong A Peneus with two container ships and two oil tankers respectively are expected to sail on Tuesday. There are two vessels viz Octaden and Ozay-6 with one ethanol tanker and one chemicals carrier respectively due to arrive on Monday, while four vessels viz Bunga Kantan, YM West, UASC Ajman and Kota Karim with four container ships respectively are due to arrive on Tuesday.

Port Qasim
A cargo volume of 65,586 tonnes comprising 62,310 tonnes of import cargo and 3,276 tonnes of export cargo inclusive 420 loaded and empty containers (TEUs) was handled at Port Qasim during the last 24 hours on Monday.

The total import cargo of 62,310 tonnes includes 52,020 tonnes of furnace oil; 4,746 tonnes of edible oil and 5,544 tonnes of containerised cargo. The total export cargo includes 3,276 tonnes of containerised cargo. There are two ships namely CV Maersk Detroit and MT Heng Xin with containers and edible oil are expected to sail on Monday afternoon.

A total number of three vessels viz V Maersk Detroit, MT Heng Xin and MT Akaki are currently occupying berths to load/offload containers, edible oil and furnace oil respectively during the last 24 hours. As many as two ships namely Al-Soor-II and MT Karachi with furnace oil are currently at the outer anchorage of Port Qasim. There are two vessels took berths at Liquid Cargo Terminal and FOTCO Oil Terminal respectively on Sunday. There are two ships namely CV Nysted Maersk and CV Maersk Detroit with containers due to arrive on Monday as per arrival schedule.
