19/02/2013 (World Radio Switzerland) - If there’s palm oil in produce you buy you should know about it.

The Federal Council has approved a call for clearer labeling concerning the oil.

Currently products containing the oil are often just labeled as containing vegetable oil, meaning consumers are unable to tell whether its rapeseed oil, olive or palm.

MP Dominic de Buman has been fighting for the labeling change since 2010: “It’s simple. Consumers should know what’s in their produce. In the same way that when they buy meat they should know whether its beef or even, yes, even horse! This means they can make a responsible choice and go for rapeseed oil produced here or palm oil, which is cheaper, made abroad and not necessarily good for health.”

The change could come into effect this year.
