20/11/2012 (Jakarta Post) - Indonesia is expected to absorb around 1 million tons of certified sustainable palm oil by 2015, the Kuala Lumpur-based Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) says.

This take-up will help the multi-stakeholder body reach its target of selling 9.8 million tons globally in the next three years, from 4 million tons at present, RSPO Indonesia director Desi Kusumadewi said on Monday.

“Right now,the Indonesian market absorbs less than 100,000 tons of palm oil, which is very small compared to its potential and still limited to cooking oil,” she told reporters during a press briefing in Jakarta.

Currently, the certified sustainable palm oil is used only by retail giant  PT Carrefour Indonesia to make its cooking oil with RSPO trade mark launched in July.

Last year, demand for palm oil in Indonesia, the world’s second-biggest palm oil consumer, topped 6.4 million tons, following India with 7.7 million tons.
