01/08/2012 (Farm Focus) - A biodiesel plant in Dalhousie, New Brunswick could benefit the Maritime agricultural industry.

If the playing field is level 2B Green BioEnergy plans to construct a $37 million facility that could use vegetable oils, potatoes, soybeans, canola and animal fats.

The Campbellton Tribune reported July 17 that the plant could also utilize fish waste, crude palm oil and used cooking oil to produce upwards of 175 million litres of biodiesel fuel annually.

2B Green BioEnergy President and CEO Joe Cantini told the newspaper that a predicted biodiesel shortage in Europe would open up a huge market for the product.

The Tribune pointed out that the federal government has invested in western Canadian biodiesel companies and without a similar incentive the New Brunswick biofuel venture cannot compete in the marketplace.
