New Towns: Future Poles For Sustainable Development
13/06/2012 (Bernama) - The construction projects of five new towns across the country, particularly in Hassi Messaoud and Boughezoul, set a new vision of promoting energy efficiency and sustainable development, while preserving the traditional architectural style, Algerian Press Service (APS) quoted experts as saying here on Monday.
The future new towns or 'sustainable' cities based in Hassi Messaoud, Sidi Abdellah (Algiers), Bouinan (Blida), Boughezoul (Medea) and El Menea (Ghardaia): is a modern architectural concept combining energy conservation and environmental comfort, they stressed during a meeting on energy efficiency in construction.
The invitations to tender for the construction of the new town of Hassi Messaoud, to host the future Algerian oil centre, will be launched in 2013, said Mourad Zeriati, general manager of the establishment of New Town of Hassi Messaoud (EVNH).
The Algerian-Korean consortium Dongmyeong-Saman-Won-Kun BEREG, had begun in late January last studies of development and planning of this site.
Urban design will include the most advanced solutions in renewable energy and solar in particular, while drawing inspiration from the traditional architectural style suited to social criteria and Algerian climate, architect Amel Dif explained.
The use of local materials with high thermal inertia to maximise natural ventilation will also been taken into account, she added.
To integrate the bioclimatic concept 65,000 palm trees are planted, eight holes drilled and a "drip" irrigation system has been included, all on an area of six kilometres length and 500 metres width, Zeriati said.
Maya Moussaoui, Official at the Ministry of Town Planning and Environment said in turn that the new town of Boughezoul, namely dedicated to renewable energy and industrial and logistics activity, "is based on the principles of sustainable development."
Covering an area of 6,000 hectares, 4,000 hectares for urbanisation, the architecture of the future town, includes all the parametres of environmental quality, she said.
Boughezoul city, which will host a population of nearly 35,000 residents, will incorporate sustainable architecture, energy efficiency of buildings, the recovery of rainwater, recycling wastewater, and waste collection, she added.
