17/02/2012 (Bernama) - Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd's (FGV) Canada-based unit, TRT ETGO du Quebec Inc, has helped create greater awareness among Canadian farmers about the benefits of cultivating Canola, said Hulu Selangor Member of Parliament P. Kamalanathan.

Clarifying an earlier report, he said the Canola plantation in Canada was owned by local farmers and the presence of TRT ETGO has helped create demand for the edible oil.

He said the farmland has expanded to 16,000 hectares against 4,000 hectares earlier before FGV owned the crushing plant.

"The farmers are very happy with TRT ETGO's operations," he added.

Canola originates from the rapeseed family. Its seeds are used to produce edible oil and is also suitable for biodiesel production.

The company was acquired in 2007 by FGV which is the commercial arm of the Federal Land Development Authority.

TRT ETGO is a canola seed and soybean crushing plant, with palm oil blending capabilities for both types of oil.
