KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian palm oil futures closed near record highs on Monday, rising for a seventh session in eight, on concerns over tightening supply of global commodities after Western countries stepped up sanctions against Russia for invading Ukraine.

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 28): The rally in crude palm oil (CPO) prices will be normalised once the supply dynamic issue is resolved, which includes entry flow of foreign labour in the plantation sector, according to FGV Holdings Bhd's group chief executive officer (CEO) Mohd Nazrul Izam Mansor.

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 28th Feb, 2022 ) :Imports of edible oil including soyabean and palm oil into the country during first seven months of current financial year increased by 34.70% and 55.75% respectively as compared the imports of the corresponding period of last year.

Traders raised the price of edible oil again taking the price of one litre packaged soya bean oil to Tk 180 in different city markets on Monday, despite the government’s assurance that the price of the commodity would not rise until Eid-ul-Fitr in May.

Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, which account for more than half of the world’s soybean supply, are expecting smaller harvests this crop season. Major agricultural agencies and consultancies have already slashed their forecasts for the soybean output in 2021-22 as a result of severe drought since November.

With the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, the import of sunflower oil to India is also likely to take a hit. India imports around 70% of its total import of sunflower edible oil from Ukraine and around 20% from Russia. Meanwhile, India’s own sunflower production has been stagnant for the past few years at around 60,000 tonnes (2019-20), which is grown on around 2.40 hectares.

THE Ukraine-Russia conflict is set to help keep crude palm oil (CPO) prices at historic highs for a longer period as the edible oil market faces a sharper squeeze while the price trends attract more directional trading interest.
