India seen importing 400,000 tonnes of palm oil

26/02/2008 (The News - International, India), Kuala Lumpur - India will be in the market to import up to 400,000 tonnes of palm oil and about 50,000 tonnes of soyoil in the next three months, as importers rush to take advantage of a deepening discount for palm versus soy oil, a leading industry official said on Monday.

Ghee and edible oil crisis is looming

25/02/2008 (The Post, Pakistan) - Ghee and cooking oil prices have once again increased this month which affected the purchasing power of consumers. Local manufacturers blame that prices of palm oil in the international market have gone up from $ 1,120 to $ 1,150 per tonne. The retail market price of a four kg of oil tin has increased from Rs 550 to Rs 625. Similarly, a 9.5 litre of cooking oil tin was being sold at Rs 1,140, is now available at Rs 1,250 per tin. The price of one kg pouch of ghee has also gone up from Rs 112 to Rs 124.

Row over crude palm oil duty

21/02/2008 (Financial Express, India), New Delhi - The tariff structure on vegetable oils has become a contentious issue between the two opposing sections of the industry. The producers of hydrogenated vegetable oil (vanaspati) want the duty on crude palm oil (CPO) to be reduced to 20%, while the manufacturers of refined vegetable oils want the duty to remain at the existing 46.35%, which they say is "already quite low."

Sabah places high priority on development of oil palm industry

21/02/2008 (Borneo Bulletin), Kota Kinabalu - Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman said the development of the oil palm industry in Sabah will continue to be given priority by the State government. Based on the projection of the agriculture land estimated at 2.2million hectares, about 1.8 million had been identified suitable for oil palm plantations.
