02/11/2009 (Bio Fuel Daily) - European palm oil buyers who are refusing to purchase expensive eco-friendly palm oil were named and shamed Monday by environmental campaigners WWF International. Only 10 out of the 59 major retailers and manufacturers surveyed in an industry scorecard have lived up to their commitments to buy "sustainable" palm oil which is manufactured according to strict standards, it said.

Certified Sustainable Palm Oil Trade Exceeds 250,000 MT
02/11/2009 (Environmental Leader) - More than 250,000 tons (metric tons) of certified sustainable palm oil have been purchased (PDF) since its availability late last year, marking the first stages of a viable market for sustainable palm oil, according to the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). In the last two months alone, more than 100,000 tons of palm oil or corresponding certificates were acquired by companies globally, said RSPO.

The Tide is turning towards palm oil
02/11/2009 (Deforestration Watch.org) - In a report released recently by the Institute of Public Affairs in Melbourne, Australia called "Palming off livelihoods?: The misguided campaign against palm oil," the IPA analyses the current anti-palm oil campaigns conducted by the likes of Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth (FOE) and The Palm Oil Action Group (POA) and finds that poverty and not palm oil is the root cause of deforestation and orang-utan population loss.

Methane a major worry in climate change

But it now seems that the effect of methane on climate change has been seriously underestimated as scientists have failed to take into account the gas’s reaction with airborne particles called aerosols according to new research from NASA.
